Entry Requirements • Learners must be working in adult social care. Suitable job roles include: Manager, Assistant Manager or Supervisor • This qualification is a natural progression for those who have completed Level 3 in Health and Social Care • A dedication to completing a higher level qualification, with the volume and level of study at undergraduate level

What is a higher apprenticeship?

Higher apprenticeship programmes have been designed to train individuals to foundation and degree level, providing them with the knowledge and skills required to meet employers’ and business needs.

Higher apprenticeships are the next step up from advanced apprenticeships and are nationally accredited work-based programmes. This allows employers to invest into their own organisation’s talent and increase productivity and profitability through a highly qualified and skilled workforce.


Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is suitable for employees working in adult social care who have a managerial or business development role or are looking to develop in this area. 


 Objectives of learning:

  • This higher apprenticeship identifies ways to provides high-quality care and is designed for those employees who aspire to a more senior role.
  • The framework further develops an understanding of those individuals who are supporting in a variety of settings including their own homes, supported accommodation, day care centre’s or residential accommodation.
  • As a higher apprentices you could manage the day-to-day provision in a residential service or specialise in an area such as dementia.


Structure of the apprenticeship

This higher apprenticeship includes mandatory units and a range of optional knowledge and competence units. These will be chosen in discussion between yourself, your employee and the tutor to meet the needs of your business.  There are three pathways to choose from: Residential Services, Management or Advanced Practice.

Mandatory units:

  • Using and developing systems that promote communication
  • Promoting professional development
  • Developing health and safety and risk management policies
  • Working in partnership in health and social care
  • Understanding professional management and leadership
  • Understanding professional supervision practice
  • Undertaking a research project within services for health and social care

Optional units include:

  • Recruitment and selection
  • Safeguarding vulnerable adults
  • Leading and managing practice in dementia care
  • Supporting individuals with multiple conditions


Please note, this qualification is currently not available for children’s and young people’s services



Your employee will require technical knowledge and will show competence through complex work activities.  Assessments are conducted in the workplace through observation of the duties carried out and a range of other methods; including witness statements, professional discussions and reflective accounts, written reports and computer based assignments.  The qualification is flexible to meet the needs of the job however Home study and research will be required for assignments.
