Bury College Dental apprenticeships are approved by General Dental Council as a training provider for Dental Nurses. This apprenticeship will provide excellent preparation for dental nurses to progress to working as a dental therapist, dental hygienist, dental nurse team manager, team leader, or dental practice manager.


During the apprenticeship, individuals will develop a range of behaviours which are expected of all Dental Nurses:

Ethical - Commitment to the General Dental Council Standards for the Dental Team.

Professional - Reliability, working to high standards. A commitment to excellent customer service, effective time management and self-management and appropriate use and storage of confidential information.

Commitment - A caring approach toward patients and colleagues and a commitment to striving for the best at all times.

Responsible - Take responsibility for own actions and act in accordance with GDC Standards. Act and raise concerns as described in the Principles of Raising Concerns.

Recognise the impact of own personal behaviours and work/act professionally. Implement the processes of informed consent. Recognise and act upon the legal and ethical responsibilities involved in the protection and promotion of health care to individuals.

Reflection and Self Awareness - Awareness of own impact and influence when working with others. An awareness of how to get the best from each individual and the ability to reflect on own practice to support self-development.

Bury College apprenticeships are work based training programmes which are carried out in the workplace. 20% of your apprentice’s time will be dedicated to off the job training which equates to one and a half hours a day or one full day a week. Off the job activities can include:

  • Apprenticeship training
  • Coursework
  • Observing colleagues
  • Receiving mentoring
  • Teaching or learning the theory related to their roles



Functional Skills:

Functional Skills are a vital part of an apprenticeship. Functional Skills provides the essential knowledge, skills and understanding needed to operate confidently, effectively and independently. These are available at Level 1 and Level 2 and the level your employee will work towards will depend on the previous qualifications they have achieved, the results of an assessment prior to their apprenticeship and the requirements of the apprenticeship they are completing.


If your employee has not already achieved Level 2 English and maths they must study for and take the tests for Level 2 English and maths and achieve Level 1 English and maths for the Level 2 Apprenticeship.
